Common Core
Close Reading is a central focus on the Common Core and many other new, specific state standards. Close Reading is a skill that requires students to determine purpose and notice features and language used by the author so that they can think thoughtfully and methodically about the details in the text and why they were used.
Reading A-Z provides an array of resources and lessons that draw students into the text and teach them how to examine the facts and details presented. Resources include Close Reading Packs, Leveled Books, Graphic Organizers, Comprehension Skill Packs, Theme Packs, Project-Based Learning Packs, and Paired Books — all of which teach students how to become successful close readers.
Raz-Kids delivers hundreds of leveled books in computer-based and mobile formats that include a number of tools and features that promote Close Reading skills and strategies. Each book comes equipped with annotation tools, a word journal, vocabulary cards, and a comprehension quiz that includes a constructed response question.
Learning science requires that students pay close attention to details. Science A-Z provides teachers and students with an extensive collection of books and resources that can be used for Close Reading instruction and practice, including Investigation Packs, Project-Based Learning Packs, and FOCUS Books.
Close Reading teaches students to seek out micro-levels of understanding. It's more than being able to retell a story or provide a main idea or supporting details from a text. When students are taught to read a text closely, they become more skilled at locating evidence within a sentence or a paragraph or a page of a text or story. Then orally or in writing, they can justify answers to text-dependent questions based on evidence. These are basic close reading skills as outlined by the Common Core English language arts Standards, as well as most newly written state standards that all student must know to succeed in college and in their career.
