A favorite holiday for many people, Independence Day honors the day the United States of America was created. Every year from coast to coast on the Fourth of July, elaborate fireworks celebrations are accompanied by parades and picnics, along with the consumption of about 150 million hotdogs! All because in 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed 56 times (starting with John Hancock) ensuring 2.5 million colonists’ freedom from British rule.
The very first Fourth of July parade was held in 1785 in Bristol, Rhode Island. Today, more than $1 billion is spent purchasing fireworks for Independence Day each year, with more than 16,000 different fireworks celebrations held across the country.
