Over the past two years, the world of education has changed immensely to keep both teachers and their students safe. In doing so, many schools have moved toward distance learning or hybrid learning models. Distance education is defined by the physical distance between students and teachers during instruction that requires the use of digital tools to facilitate communication. The use of these digital technologies can also be referred to as virtual learning, the concept of learning using web-based education technology to instruct, provide resources and activities, and administer assessments.
The term virtual learning may be new to some, so we’ve taken a deep dive to provide you with all the information you need to know.
What is Virtual Learning?
Virtual learning is, by definition, the concept of using computer software, internet resources, or a combination of both to instruct students and achieve learning objectives. Using this format, instructors communicate with their students in a variety of ways such as video chat or email. In some cases, virtual learning includes video instruction in real-time, allowing it to be interactive.
Pros and Cons of Virtual Learning
Transitioning from traditional, in-class instruction to virtual learning can be tough, and present different advantages and challenges. Here are a few things to consider:
Benefits of virtual learning:
- Flexibility: Students are able to learn from anywhere with the use of digital tools to receive instruction, participate in activities, and evaluate their progress. All lessons can be taught virtually and all assignments and assessments are completed online. As long as students follow the deadlines set by their instructor, they will continue to remain on track.
- Differentiated Instruction: Virtual learning tools such as Raz-Plus easily allow for differentiated instruction, which is quite difficult in an in-person learning setting. Without hesitation or educator intervention, tools such as this effectively evaluate a student’s current reading level, provide content to cater to their respective level, and continually evaluates a student’s learning level to continue to challenge them while catering to their interests.
- School Supplies: Each year, parents and students embark on a journey to their local store to acquire all the necessary school supplies to support them on their learning journeys. With virtual learning, all tools are available within their desktop or mobile device. Once acquired, the software or account for a web-based tool will be established, allowing students to bring learning to them without having to purchase as many items.
- Accessibility: No more worrying about leaving your student’s books or notebooks at school! Without having to physically go into the classroom, students can access their lessons, educational resources, assignments, and assessments any time, anywhere with the click of a button!
Challenges with virtual learning:
- Establishing a Routine: When in a virtual learning environment, success depends on many factors, including daily routines. Each day students will need to work with their parents to ensure they have established routines that allow for learning and fulfillment of deadlines. Though this can be difficult, it is an important factor to contribute to a positive learning outcome.
- Environmental Distractions: We all can relate to the distractions that are inherently present in our homes such as family members, pets, or the television. Students, too, experience these types of distractions. Minimizing these distractions or working in harmony with them by providing periodic learning breaks throughout the day will help to provide an environment conducive to learning.
- Technological Requirements: Virtual learning requires digital technology such as a laptop or desktop computer to access lessons. Outside of the hardware, students and their families will need to have reliable internet access.
